About the District
Plainpalais is Geneva’s most central district, located at the southern tip of Lake Geneva, between the Rhône and the Are rivers. It used to be a commune on its own until it was absorbed in 1931 by the city. Mentioned in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Plainpalais has always been a thriving area, both historically, culturally and economically. The district’s vibrant cultural scene offers a wide variety of entertainment, from several theatres (like the Pitoeff Theatre, the Casino-theatre and the Grand Théâtre), several museums to a couple of churches and the Arve river banks where you can enjoy a pebble beach and a dip. Its Plaine hosts the biggest flea market and farmers market in Geneva as well as a skatepark and different events and fairs throughout the year. Plainpalais apartments are ideal for city-dwellers who want everything at their doorsteps. Its central location also ensures excellent transport links to the rest of Switzerland, which make temporary apartments in Plainpalais a very attractive accommodation option for students, doctors and business people looking for corporate housing near Plainpalais’s Geneva University and Switzerland’s largest university hospital, HUG.
